Belt Cleaning System Provides Immediate Results & Reduces Material Buildup

Problem

A large mining operation in Peru faced significant challenges in a circuit of 10 conveyor belts due to the accumulation of fine material adhering to the belt and in the return area, affecting structures and idlers. This issue resulted in misalignment, reduced belt lifespan, premature idler wear, and damage to the cleaner blades. As a consequence, manual cleaning of the accumulated material beneath the belts was required every 72 hours, increasing maintenance demands, downtime, and negatively impacting plant efficiency.

Solution

After evaluating each conveyor belt in the plant, a dual cleaning system was recommended, consisting of one Martin® QC1+™ Cleaner HD and one secondary cleaner with tungsten carbide blades. Our team provided support during the installation and operational testing of the equipment. Additionally, training was conducted for plant personnel on the proper operation and maintenance of the equipment installed across the 10 conveyor belts.

Results

With the implementation of the dual cleaning system, the operation achieved immediate results, significantly reducing material buildup on the belts and spillage in the return area. This improvement brought several operational benefits, including:

  •  - Increased lifespan of cleaner blades (8 months)
  •  - Reduced time required for maintenance and adjustments
  •  - Quick blade replacement, completed in less than 30 minutes
